Numerical Simulation Study of Brittle Rock Materials from Micro to Macro Scales Using Digital Image Processing and Parallel Computing

The multi-scale, high-resolution and accurate structural modeling of rocks is a powerful means to reveal the complex failure mechanisms evaluate rock engineering safety. Due non-uniformity opacity rocks, describing their internal microstructure, mesostructure macro joints accurately, how model progressive fracture process, significant challenge. This paper aims build numerical method that can take into account real spatial structures be applied study crack propagation in different scales rocks. By combining process analysis (RFPA) simulator with digital image processing technology, large-scale finite element models multi-scale considering mesostructure, joints, were created mechanical behaviors on cloud computing platform. Windows-Linux interactive was used for parallel computing. simulation results show combination RFPA solver technology achieve high-efficiency calculation. In microscopic simulations, influence shale fractures mineral distribution formation revealed. simulation, it seen minerals has an impact splitting mode Brazilian model. joined mass, effectively simulated. According results, seems based images simulate brittle materials from micro scales. Primarily, efficient platform allows realistic materials.
